A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
