European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
