A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
